In my last blog post, I explained how to sign up for the December 19, 2008 BD-Live event with Christopher Nolan.
I was not all too impressed with the event. First off, I thought it would be an audio stream of the director answering audience questions that were submitted online. It wasn't. Instead, it was displayed as a text, chat-style, where Nolan picked questions to answer from those that were submitted. Second, I was disappointed with how many disconnects happened where certain scenes were cut short by jumping to the next chapter. I'm not sure if these were intentional or not, but it was irritating and distracted from the event.
Lastly, I would have to give a thumbs down to Nolan's professionalism. Nolan did pause the movie twice for "pee breaks". I mean, maybe he has a small bladder, but if you are going to sit down with fans of your film, I would think he should have prepared himself better. Although he did answer some good questions with correspondingly good answers, there were plenty of stupid questions that were chosen which made it all feel like a chat-room full of teenagers. The lamest is how a guy asked Nolan to do a marriage proposal to the girl he was sitting next to. How awfully romantic. /Sarcasm.
If future events are going to be this lame, full of technical difficulties, and where it seems even the director isn't too thrilled to be a part of the event, then I simply won't sign up to waste my time taking part in them. There are very few films that I would actually care to hear commentary from the individuals involved in the making of the movie. The Dark Knight was one of them, and there was nothing impressive about the event.
